Whether you’re experimenting with peel and stick  or you’re taking the plunge and transforming a space with traditional wallpaper, papered wallcoverings are a popular decor choice. However, choosing the right wallpaper for your space might feel like a daunting task with more options than ever before on the market.

To make your journey to the perfect design a breeze, we’re diving into the biggest wallpaper trends of 2026.

“This year is going to be full of bold colors and patterns,” says Caroline Zamadics, a freelance interior designer based in South Carolina. “Five years ago, wallpaper was still considered to be outdated by most, but we’re all tired of solid gray rooms, and we’re craving more color and pattern. Vendors have come out with so many cool modern designs and interesting textures, plus it’s more accessible than ever.” Before you purchase any rolls, peruse the stylish wallcovering ideas below for everything you need to know about the current wallpaper trends taking over 2026 interior design.

1. Color-drenching

Thinking about color-drenching a room, but worried that an all-paint approach isn’t the move for your space? Lately, designers have been leaning into the color-drenching trend while also incorporating vibrant wallpaper for a more engaging, textured result. “Color drenching a room with paint has been a trend over the last year, but people are experimenting with this concept in the wallpaper world now, too. There are lots of designs that pair colorful painted trim and cabinetry, with the walls in a bold, coordinating pattern wallpaper,” explains Zamadics.

2. Maximalism

Why keep your design restrained when you could go tastefully over the top? “We’re seeing fewer wallpapered accent and statement walls, and instead clients going for entire rooms,” says Zamadics. “And sometimes multiple rooms in a house! I think we’re in a ‘more is more’ era.”

3. Thoughtful coordination

As you’re considering wallpaper for a room, make sure to think of it in relation to the rest of the space and not in a vacuum. Notably, Zamadics is seeing designers lean into “a lot of pattern matching in rooms, where the upholstery and wallpaper are done in the same pattern. It feels very old school, but it’s being done in very modern, fresh ways.”

4. Kitschy toile

Designer Katie Kime was onto something when she debuted her New York-inspired toile fabric with motifs inspired by the sights of the concrete jungle. It’s popularity resulted in an expansion to her destination-themed toile wallcoverings to include patterns that pay homage to Marfa, New Orleans, and Nashville, among others. While Kime is perhaps one of the most well-known designers leaning into the idea of modernizing designs inspired by 18th-century French Toile de Jouy styles, she certainly isn’t the only one bringing kitschy toile to the world of interior design.

5. Oversize florals

Understanding and playing with scale is a major part of design. And sometimes, switching things up in favor of a larger-than-life approach is the way to go. When it comes to 2026 wallpaper trends, oversize florals are stealing the spotlight. This is an extension of the maximalism concept—opting for enlarged, in-your-face florals that create a truly immersive space.

6. Biophilic prints

Biophilic design is an approach wherein design is used to strengthen the connection of the occupants to their natural environment. One common biophilic design practice is to place a living wall of plants indoors. However, with wallpaper design, it’s become especially trendy to lean heavily into natural designs that feel connected to the earth. The ultimate aim with biophilic design is to reduce stress by mirroring the way that spending time in actual nature benefits the well-being of humans.

7. Genre blending

This trend is all about breaking the rules and reinventing them in a way that fits your varied interests. Why settle for just rustic or just modern when you could blend the two aesthetics with a rustic-modern wallpaper. If you find yourself gravitating toward two distinctly unique styles, consider how they might work together in a funky mix-and-match approach for a space that feels au courant.

8. Moody

Embracing color doesn’t mean you have to choose bright hues. Instead, we’re seeing a rise in wallpapers that are almost excessively dark, but in a way that works. These patterns are on the edge of being darker than what should look good, but they manage to create a moody vibe as opposed to a bleak space.

9. Hidden micro-patterns

This wallpaper trend is all about designs that are more than meets the eye. Micro-format patterns that create one vibe from feet away while revealing something totally different up close are on the rise. This is a fun trend for folks who want to imbue their space with character, but also want to ensure the space feels sophisticated and refined.
