Green Kitchens Are Everywhere—Here’s How to Pull Off The Look

Green kitchen ideas are having a major moment—but the key to making the look last is all in the execution. From choosing the right shade to balancing finishes and knowing where to use it, here’s how to design a green kitchen that feels fresh, layered, and never overwhelming.

Green kitchens are having a moment in the world of interior design. From forest green cabinets to emerald backsplashes and green appliances, verdant kitchen designs are worth considering. From picking the right shade to deciding where to add a leafy splash of color, we’re mapping out exactly how to achieve the perfect green kitchen design. Trust us, these green kitchen ideas will surely leave you full of envy.

Why green is a good kitchen color

What comes to mind when you think of the color green? Chances are, the words tranquil, fresh, healthy, abundance, nature, or vegetation may have been among what you thought of. That’s because there’s an immense amount of psychology tied to colors and how they affect humans. A kitchen is a place you want people to come and feel refreshed and nourished—so filling the space with a color that evokes those very feelings is a great way to ensure that the environment is just as enriching as the food they’re sure to experience in that space.

Select the perfect shade of green

The first step in building a green kitchen is to settle on the right leafy shade for your space and style. A pale, dusty green will create a much different vibe from a rich jewel tone.

Muted Green

Subdued shades of green, like sage, are a good option if you want a cottage-like vibe in your kitchen that feels soft and timeless. These shades are worth considering if you want green to act more like a base “colorful neutral” in your space than a focal-point hue.

Earthy Green

Earthy greens, like olive, bring a warm, natural feel like you’re among the cypress trees in Tuscany. If the rest of your kitchen design incorporates a lot of warm wood tones, then an earthy green is a nice complement.

Deep Green

For a refined and sophisticated kitchen, a deep shade like hunter or forest green is smart. These shades of green pair nicely with rich copper finishes.

Bold Green

Looking for drama? A bright, vibrant shade like emerald or teal will fill a kitchen with palpable energy. The punchy, saturated characteristics of a bold green will instantly make the kitchen feel buzzy and alive.

Select complementary finishings and accents

As you’re selecting your dream shade of green, it’s important to consider how it will look alongside the rest of your space. For example, sage green looks great with warm honey-tone woods, while darker shades of wood, like walnut, pair nicely with forest green. If you’re going with a modern shade of emerald green, black finishings are a great idea.

Decide Where to Incorporate Green

With a green kitchen, you don’t actually want every single element to be a verdant shade. On the contrary, thoughtfully selecting just a few strategic places to bring in the color is the best way to pull off a green kitchen that is eye-catching without being overdone.

Cabinetry

One of the most common places to incorporate color of any kind in a kitchen is the cabinetry. If you’re opting for a darker green color, consider only painting your lower cabinets green and pairing them with a lighter neutral upper cabinet color. However, if you want more of a color-drenched look, you could go all in with painting both the upper and lower cabinets green.

Island

Similar to the idea of painting green on your lower cabinets, you could paint the kitchen island green while having the surrounding cabinets and countertops be a different color. Doing so would dry visitors’ eyes toward the center of the room or the heart of your kitchen. For a more subtle approach, you could select a countertop material with slight green undertones.

Backsplash Tile

Your backsplash tile is a great place to have some fun and infuse personality into your kitchen design. Many popular pottery glazes are green which means that there’s no shortage of green tile options on the market.

Appliances

While it’s most common for kitchen appliances to be metallic, there’s no rule dictating that you stick with that practice. For fans of a retro feel, consider a vintage-style colored Smeg fridge. Or, if you want to invest in a true showstopping statement piece, a green La Cornue French range will impress every dinner guest you have. Alternatively, you could bring green into your appliances in a less permanent way with a green stand mixer or water kettle.

Cookware and Dishware

From colorful enamel cast iron cookware to green earthenware plates, it’s easy to bring in leafy hues to your kitchen via the everyday tools and dishes you use. This is a great way to dip your feet into a color palette and test out how you like it before going all-in on redoing your cabinetry.
